Jonathan Callan

For Ballroom 2022 Jonathan Callan (°1961 UK) will present some refined works he made over the last years.
Callan’s work demonstrates an obsessive interest in materiality. He sees himself as an artist preoccupied with the nature of meaning, of how we ascribe meaning to our experiences and how we encode that meaning in the form of written language.

Almost all of his work from the last years has evolved from books, making use of the physicality of the objects themselves and the text and images contained within.
The artist enters into a dialogue with generic aspects of language through various sculptural and painterly processes.

His work is included in major museum collections including: The Museum of Modern Art, New York; The British Museum, London; The Henry Moore Institute, Leeds; South London Gallery, London; Whit-worth Gallery, Manchester; The British Council; The Ferens Art Gallery, Hull; The High Museum Atlanta; The West Collection, Pennsylvania; The Leopold Hörsch Museum Düren, Germany; JP Morgan Chase Bank, New York.

In Belgium Galila Barzilai-Hollander has numerous works by Callan in her collection.
