Catharina Dhaen talks about her artwork that was created during the lockdown period in 2020.
“When I work on a new painting, there comes a time when I break free from details. I want to see the big picture. I turn the work upside down, look at it in the mirror or take some photos of it. After I have consciously zoomed out myself, and the whole has been approved (“it works!”), the painting may be ready to show. Then I invite others to zoom in to get as close as possible to the artwork, like I did when painting.
After all, we are used to the fact that our experience of viewing paintings usually takes place from a literal and figurative distance. In the postlockdown society everything revolves around the new magic word ‘distance’ as well. Right now Numbered By is zooming in. In this way you can completely embraced the artwork.”
