In his own artistic practice, Tom Volkaert combines his new sculptural creations with the  manipulation of existing artworks or ready mades. This equation of activities – which take place in  the studio as well as in the gallery or museum – enables him to question the autonomous, sacred work of art and to develop a visual language focused on materiality.  

Tom Volkaert made a collage for Numbered By, entitled Collage for Bumbered Ny, that takes this  method as a starting point. For this he likes to refer to the definition of Collage described  on Wikipedia. Collage (/ kəˈlɑːʒ /, from the French: coller, “to glue” or “to stick together”) is a technique of art creation, primarily used in the visual arts, but in music too, by which art results from an assemblage of different forms, thus creating a new whole.
